Observation details
Pan S4. Long staying bird (first found on 8 November). Feeding very actively from mid-morning loosely associating with Little Stints and Ringed Plovers. Spent most of time foraging on drier parts of pan - hardly seen to get its feet wet! Would occasionally walk into clumps of vegetation in middle of pan and forage there. Would sometimes disappear behind these clumps for 5-10mins before reappearing. No obvious juvenile feathers and outer primaries seem to be growing. Suggests this is an adult bird (2cy+). Growth of outer primaries meant that classic primary projection of this species was missing with tertial tips coming in line with tail but no further projection. Warm buffy tones in comparison with pale Little Stints accompanying it. Only appeared slightly larger than Little Stints but noticeably more attenuated at rear end (even though this individual lacked primary projection). Legs dark, often seen to "crouch" bending at tibio-tarsal joint. Supercilium prominent both before and after eye but buff-tinged throughout. Seen in flight on one occasion and showed dark bar running lognitudinally along rump. Slight pale wing bar formed by buff tips to greater coverts.
