Observation details
Continuing first-winter found by Bruce Hoover. Gorgeous small gull about same size as BOGU with striking pattern ok upperside - gray-brown mantle and lesser secondary coverts contrasting with black panel on outer wing - primary coverts through outer primaries - and with white triangle formed by greater secondary coverts, secondaries, and inner primaries. Rump and tail white with black terminal band on tail. Brownish nape through-rear crown; white crown, face and underparts. Eye dark, in close photos can see large dark pupil with narrow whitish iris. Slender black bill. Grayish pink legs and feet. Called fairly frequently when feeding with BOGUs, a thin high pitched call lacking the roughness of BOGU. Copious photos and some poor recordings.
