Observation details
This sapsucker had some retained immature plumage characteristics, which at this time of year suggests Yellow-bellied rather than Red-naped. The bird also had more buffy-yellow feathering on its back than a typical Red-Naped, the crown was not solid red, but well mottled with brown tipped feathers, suggesting Yellow-Bellied. The he auricular stripe is mottled with paler tipped feathers, with the supercilium looking like it broadens a bit behind the eye, characteristicsmore indicative of Yellow-bellied.
