Observation details
Notes word for word from field notebook: "Mike spotted a Spizella in some buckthorns NE of Black Dog Lake Park, just N of the train tracks. Mike and I debated the ID. I felt it was a chipping and he thought it was a clay clored. Once he looked at the field guide both he and Kevin agreed it was a winter plumaged chipping sparrow. I had excellent scope views. Characteristics included: -uniform whitish gray breast entirely unmarked (no streaks or central breast spot) -gray nape -mostly rufous or reddish brown crown with fine black streaks bisected by a median crown stripe, which was cream y white with fine black streaks. This crown stripe might not have extended to the back of the crown. We only saw a front view -pinkish/fleshy colored bill -pale supercilium -black eyeline distinct, passing through eye and lores to bill -shorter tail than surrounding American Tree Sparrows. Tail notched -back not nearly as rusty as American Tree Sparrows, mostly brownish with streaks. -see drawing from field notebook -report turned into MORC
