Observation details
Unusual location for this species. Even more unusual date; should be wintering far south of here by now. Very large dark swift with broad square tail, long wings, frequent soaring. Pale patch on belly, indicating juvenile. Photos show white around forehead. Nowhere near the white-throated swift flock seen later. Came in low, flying past us slightly above eye level at about 835am about halfway between the PCH parking and the outflow culvert. Just from the size and gliding flight we thought either Black Swift or something even more unusual (like Common Swift). We spent the next few minutes trying to keep it in sight and get photos, as it circled the area twice and then headed southwest past the PCH parking lot and out of view.
