Observation details
Found by Terry Schiefer. Mostly black Red-tailed Hawk with black back, belly and all-black head except for area on face near eyes and bill. Wing tips shorter than tail. White streaks on upper breast and a brighter white spot on mid-breast. Bill was gray. Saw the bird from behind, and a pale white wedge of tail was visible. Fanned tail while grooming to show a dark terminal band with very whitish area on more proximal regions of tail feathers. Eye color was black - so presumably an adult bird. Viewed at more than 200 yards with 25-40x on spotting scope while bird perched in a cluster of trees surrounded by open pasture. Heat distortion was extremely high, and digiscoping attempts were likely unsuccessful at capturing a good, focused image.
