Observation details

Adult basic plumage bird. Very dark gray above, noticeably sooty gray on breast becoming whiter towards the undertail coverts. Long relatively slender orange bill. Dark head with white around the base of the bill. White upper half of tail with thick black band below that ends in thin white terminal band. White secondaries conspicuous in flight and when sitting on the water. Photos
