Observation details
**Very rare in California away from the Colorado River. Seen on the main lake at Santa Fe Dam with a few Northern "type" Mallards. I see quite a few Mexican Mallards back in Phoenix, AZ where I live. When I found this bird I noted the female Northern Mallard-like plumage with the yellow-green bill instantly. From there I noted several other field marks such as the all-dark tail, overall darker back, no curled tail feathers, a dark eye-line, and a dark crown. I found a report of a Mexican Mallard from the San Gabriel Basin Spreading Grounds by John Garrett and compared my bird to his and all of the field marks lined up.
