iPhone recording of 21 Long-billed Dowitchers picking up to circle Eaton marsh at MNWR, always in view, starting about 14 sec. mark. Landed back in view. 5/1/16
Observation details
*Rare in spring. Flock dropped in to marsh and immediately set to feeding. Long billed, overall orange ground color on head, neck, sides, flanks to tail. Brown crown with light eyebrow, dark eyeline from bill that was very slightly decurved on some. Black centered, rounded, scapulars with white edging, wingtip length equal to tail tip. Dark barring on upper breast and sides. None had white belly, but a couple had the orange fade to light under the tail, but not until well past the legs. Most birds had heavy bodied, humped back aspect with a couple looking a little more flat backed when feeding. This may have been just posture variation, but a couple did seem overall a little smaller, less bulky. I can't rule out that some were prairie race of S.B. Vocalization of flock recorded on iPhone sounded good for long-billed, as they picked up a few times, and flew around. Photos
