Observation details
Continuing bird found here last weekend by Emmett Iverson, though he did not post it on eBird. After searching the thousands of scoters both on the water and as they streamed along, I still could not find the LTDU. I finally found it on the north side of the Napa River breakwater near the east shore. Around (38.0730192, -122.2412058). I had expected it to be in one of the large SUSC flocks, but it was with mostly scaup and a few SUSC. This was a medium sided duck, larger than BUFF and only slightly smaller than a SUSC. Mostly white appearance from a distance but upon viewing closer with a scope it had a brown back and a small brown spot on the cheek. When it stretched its wings were gray and it’s underparts were completely white. Diving frequently, but was always easy to pick out of the flock by it’s bright white appearance. Awful digiscoped photos. A long-awaited lifer for me!!
