Observation details
When this sparrow first popped up, with its unstreaked underparts and its distinctive facial pattern, it was immediately recognizable as a Clay-colored Sparrow. Unlike many dull-plumaged sparrows, the colors of this bird, while subdued, were warmly buffy making it brighter and easier to pick out of the flock of White-crowned Sparrows foraging around it. It had darkly-outlined buffy auriculars giving it a clean, crisp facial look. The crown was streaked with black, the median crown stripe was white, and the supercilium was broad and buffy. The bill was pinkish and there were two faint lateral throat stripes bordering the throat. The gray nape contrasted with the overall buffy plumage.
