Observation details
Continuing bird found by Jim Royer. Added recording. Photos to follow. This was the second round of searching today. This morning brought four fleeting unsatisfying views with no identifiable photos, but there were also 25+ birders present, and the bird flushed twice into the canyon, presumably to hide. This time we had about 13 continuous minutes with the bird in full view about 100 feet away; no other birders present. It spent most of its time foraging a few feet above ground or ON the ground in dead stalks. The most reliable spot is directly behind the camp host RV in coffeeberry, but it flushed several times and finally landed across the campground in a Baccharis shrub by site 10, then slowly moved 6” or so at a time through the veg low to the ground toward site 13. It was 70 minutes this morning before the first glimpse, and then it disappeared for 30-40 minutes at a time before popping up. No chatter vocalizations this morning at all (in 4 hours), but the winds were also gusting to 20 mph. Listen for “rattle” calls, which were relatively frequent this evening.
