Observation details
Reported by Jim Andrews, who told us about it. Male, diving around the rocks at the south end of the island opposite the lake access. We watched for about 20 minutes, during which the bird dove consistently, spending as much time under the water as above, sometimes disappearing from view behind the rocks, but much of the time in view in open water. It was some distance away, requiring a scope for identification, but the field marks were clear: unmistakable dark duck with large bold white patch at base of bill, a smaller spot on the side of the head, white stripe on the breast and side. Record photos taken, but the bird was too far away for a decent photo.
