Observation details
Continuing bird. First seen at approximately 7:20 for about 30 seconds before it flew off. The bird then returned two additional times in the hour that we were at the location. The bird flew off towards the southeast (possibly into Santa Fe county?) and seems to wander the neighborhood a good deal. A fairly large woodpecker, approximately the size of a Northern Flicker (perhaps just a bit smaller, and slightly more compact in structure), with tan-gray underparts and head. The wings and back were black with dense, thin white horizontal barring. The tail was also black with the same thin white barring. The hind crown and nape were a red-orange color, and the lores and forehead were an orange color. There also appeared to be a blush of rosy coloration in the lower belly. The eye and bill were both dark, and the side of the face appeared to be slightly grayer than the rest of the bird's body. Also, it appeared as though there was a bit of dusky grayish coloration above the eye and into the crown, which made this part of the bird's head appear slightly darker than the rest (though this was only noticeable in certain lighting conditions). It seemed to be the overall consensus of those present this morning was that this was likely a female, or perhaps a young male. I believe that this constitutes a first Los Alamos county record.
