Observation details
**Exceptionally rare locally. Bred on Long Island in the 1800s, and perhaps into the 1900s when agriculture was still widespread, but now only encountered on migration, and then only very rarely. Only 4 NYC eBird reports outside of Prospect Park (which has 6 or so historical sightings), one of which was of a bird at nearby Riis Park in late November 2014. Flushed from patch of bluestem grass, flew to a Bayberry bush, where it perched in the open for a minute or two, and then disappeared. A short while later I tried to re-find it with Ron Ellard, who was nearby, and an intensive effort of about 40 minutes sadly yielded no re-sightings. Photos and video from initial encounter.
