Observation details
Both Purples are in first winter plumage, aged by contrasting juvenile white-fringed wing coverts and tertials with first winter grey scapulars. Purple Sandpipers are not seen in juvenile plumage southern Ontario because they molt into first winter plumage in the north before migration. Because its plumage is generally dark grey, many people wonder why it’s called Purple Sandpiper. Only in winter plumage and under certain light conditions does it show the purple sheen that gives it its name. In my experience this is when the sun is shining. VIDEO;
