Media notes
Drumming noises are solely Black-backed Woodpecker, observed directly while making recording. Call notes are a Hairy Woodpecker that was present also.
Observation details
Male and a female. Seen extremely well. Photographed. Known spot with extensive burned trees recommended to me by a Montana birder. Seen and photographed by many others the last few months at this location. Extensive black back with glossy blue sheen. White spotting limited only to primaries. Heavily barred on the flanks. Thin black malar with broad white stripe above. Tiny white spot behind the eye, but no hint of an eyeline. Larger bodied and larger billed than American Three-toed Woodpecker.
