Observation details
Transitional-plumaged individual in T29-2. This was an interesting bird and initially passed off as partially-leucistic Eared Grebe. None of us had experience with Horned Grebes in this plumage. Scoping the bird, we made the following observations: thicker neck than Eared Grebe, thicker and straighter bill with whitish tip visible at all angles, reddish side of neck and flanks, red eye, red in the lores. The bird sat fairly low in the water and the rear-end was not fluffed up. The head was fairly rounded, not noticeably peaked. The black on the crown was extensive and solid, extending to the back of the neck in a thin line. Fortunately, both Sibley and NGS have illustrations and text describing this plumage, shown in spring, March/April.
