Observation details
Some identification notes from others: - supercilium is grey not buff which is good for BRSP, whereas CCSP usually shows a conspicuously bright buff supercilium, especially the front half of the supercilium; - strong eye-ring looks fine for BRSP, but would be atypical for CCSP; - the bill looks rather small and thin like BRSP, whereas my impression of CCSP is of a somewhat thicker, longer bill; - the base color of the face is grey typical of BRSP, whereas the base color of CCSP face is fairly rich buff that contrasts conspicuously with the grey nape; - lateral throat stripe looks grey, rather thin, and somewhat diffuse in most photos, which seems better for BRSP, whereas CCSP usually shows thicker, darker lateral throat stripe; - the crown's base color is brown with thin short black streaks and a weak paler grey median stripe which is also thinly though distinctly streaked; this looks exactly right for taverneri BRSP; whereas CCSP shows a more heavily/coarsely streaked brown crown with a more contrasting brighter, whiter, and less streaked median stripe; - the nape seems a tad off, but not far; it shows a grey nape with very faint streaking on the side of the nape, with streaks right through the very back of the nape; and importantly it shows almost no color contrast between the grey nape and the grey face. In my experience, the extent of nape streaking is within the range of variation for taverneri BRSP, and the lack of contrast between the greyish face and the grey nape looks very good for BRSP. Whereas, on CCSP the grey nape on "pops" in contrast to it's buffy face. - Clay-colored Sparrows in October, often have quite rich buffy flanks and sides of breast; this bird doesn't show that. - overall this bird looks rather greyish and dull like BRSP, whereas October CCSP appears much brighter, richer buff colors, and more boldly contrasting especially in the face.
