Observation details
Southbound light morph adult and juvenile. The adult was initially seen circling off to the northwest, and noted for its dark throat and heavy bellyband. It soon dove, allowing me to poorly photograph it. The photographs show an adult Red-tailed Hawk with a dark throat, dark "splotchy" belly band, buffy whitish uppertail coverts, and barred tail feathers. The dark throat, belly band, and barred tail feathers generally eliminate "borealis" Red-tailed Hawks while the belly band and buffy whitish uppertail coverts generally eliminate "calurus" Red-tailed Hawks. The juvenile was noted as it circled overhead, and it showed a heavy, somewhat complete appearing belly band, dark patagials, and moderately marked underwings (all quite different from juvenile "borealis" Red-tailed Hawks from my experience).
