Observation details
We banded 27 individual NSWOs, almost entirely female hatch years, in this single evening. For most of these (26), I checked that the remex spotting (basically, covert spots) was white, and not infused with buff. Had they been infused with buff, the owls might have been the other subspecies, Aegolius acadicus brooksi, which is an endemic subspecies to Haida Gwaii (some 3000 miles away) (Birds of the World). Pyle also differentiates brooksi as having a dark sooty brown colouration; this was not the case for these reddish or light-brown owls. Conservative estimate; some owls heard near the banding station, but may have been releases.
