Observation details
Observed just upriver from our campsite (#1). Foraging very actively, high in the alder and bay trees at edge of the redwood forest next to Gualala River bank. Watched it for about 5-10 minutes before losing sight. Seen mostly from below in fairly poor light. Appeared light gray underneath, lightest on the belly and vent. When tail was closed, it appeared half yellow at the base and half black toward the tip. It fanned its tail out several times where we could see the outer tail feathers at the base were yellow, and the rest of the tail black. Yellow in the wing-pit area/sides of upper breast. Slightly darker gray head and crown, lighter gray chin. Poor but diagnostic photos and recording of chip notes.
