Observation details
Originally I listed this phalarope as a Red-necked, but after seeing another report (Jim Osborn and Graham Rice),doing further research in a shorebird guide, listening to my recorded comments regarding bill structure, and looking again at the poor photos I took, I have changed my observation to Red. I first saw this phalarope, without using optics, feeding along SW edge of water from the ledges. My first thought was Bonaparte's, based on size and color, but its feeding behavior looked different. Then using the scope, I could tell it was a phalarope so I walked over to get a closer look. It was not spinning, but in shallow water gleaning from vegetation. Small seabird, feeding near Greater Yellowlegs. Dark cap from top of head, thin line through the eye with smudge behind it, straight short bill with blunt tip, white throat and belly with faint barring on upper flanks, gray back. I enjoyed it for ten minutes when it took off, showing white wing bars. Flight was rapid and irregular. It disappeared around the bend, heading NW, where the dock for moored sailboats is located.
