Observation details
As I made my way up into the Rail's latest stronghold, so far from home, I had a theory that the intense rains of the last few days might've revitalised them a little... and goodness did they deliver!! Almost as soon as I got near enough to hear, that wildest of cries rang out, and off in hot pursuit I went!! The resulting hunt... this was one of the most thrilling hunts for a bird I've had in a very, very long time; I slowly but surely crept up on the bird as it cried out again and again, until I was quite literally within touching distance, the Rail making my ears ring... I used a time-honoured old method I learned from the vintage David Attenborough of recording the bird and trying to lure it out with its own call; this was as successful as you can get without actually seeing anything. I could track the bird as it paced back and forth, and once I even saw the tops of the Sword Grass rustling as it scurried by... but such was the impenetrability of its chosen patch that I had to admit defeat. Still!! Is there ever such a thing as defeat when Rails are involved??
