Observation details
Pair displaying in Marri tree - video. The wonderfully coloured Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius) is restricted to south-western Western Australia and occurs in eucalypt forests as well as in well-treed urban areas and is sometimes a pest in orchards. The very long upper mandible is a special adaptation to help it remove seeds from the woody seed capsules (or gumnuts) of trees such as Marri (Corymbia calophylla). This pair of Red-capped Parrots were perching in a large Marri on the Coodanup foreshore of Peel Inlet in Western Australia.
