Observation details
It was overcast this morning, which made viewing a bit difficult, but on the plus side it alleviated the problem of morning sun adding yellow cast to an otherwise colorless bird. We watched his bird on and off for some time and always saw a largely gray solitary vireo without much bright color, quite different from a supposedly fresh and bright Cassin’s Vireo at this time of the year (actually we haven’t seen them very often in fall.) We have no reliable judgment of its bill size, but the bird overall looked a bit long. No vocalization was heard. We took some documentary photos toward the end. We refrained from overly adjusting the exposure and contrast which otherwise may inadvertently wash out some important subtleties. The photos confirmed our perception, showing a mostly gray bird that lacks green on back or yellow on breast or flanks.
