Observation details
Found yesterday by Derek Lovitch. A male with bright grayish white flanks and back. The breast was black as were the undertail coverts, tail, and rump. The head was a dark rufous chestnut. The head was distinctively shaped, with a long sloping forehead and peak at rear of crown. The eye appeared copper-colored and perhaps not as deep and bright red as an adult male usually shows. This was hard to tell though in the light under which we observed the bird. The bird slept with its head tucked much of the time, and we could see its dull grayish white nictitating membrane cover its eye much of the time. This appears to be a good fall for the species in the Northeast, with one recently in Aroostook Co., and several from New Brunswick to Massachusetts, where I recently saw another at Cherry Hill Reservoir.
