Observation details
Small grebe of similar size to Horned, but showing dainty, slightly upturned bill, with 'taller' head and peaked appearance of the crown rather than the more flat-headed appearance of Horned Grebe. Very dark face. Sat high on water, but that's not necessarily conclusive. Viewed at length through scope roughly half a mile south of the Dune Trail crossing to the beach where David Clark first spotted the bird just before 11 AM (his photograph is significantly better: https://ebird.org/checklist/S73999056). Photographs below are heavily cropped but otherwise unedited, and are less than desirable due to low light and the significant distance the bird was situated offshore during my viewing. However, they show the appropriate silhouette and features to my eye. The grebe was still working its way slowly south when Andrew, Mike & I turned back north. Also viewed with Reuben Rohn, who ran with me from the parking lot to the beach to see the bird.
