Media notes
This Calidris, photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 1 April 2016 at Salt Creek Beach, Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Riverside County, California, represents either a Rock or a Purple Sandpiper, either of which would be most unexpected at this site. The identification of this bird, which was found on 25 March by Brian Daniels, Curtis Marantz, and Bradley Waggoner, is still being debated, but hopefully with some resolution soon.
Observation details
The continuing bird that has been present since first found on 25 March by Brian Daniels, Brad Waggoner, and myself was seen intermittently today with encounters at about 8:15 am, 9:00-9:20 am, and again at about 12:10-12:18 pm, typically as it foraged along the shore well to the south of the creek mouth. The light on the bird during the middle encounter was far better than it had been on my previous visits and I was able to approach to within about 12 meters of the bird, but I concentrated on getting photos today so I did not study the bird as carefully as I had done in previous visits.
