Observation details
Apparently, the swifts have been roosting in the chimney at Street School for a couple of weeks, as reported on Channel 6 (KOTV) news a couple of days ago. I got there about 7:12 and a few swifts were present. As I ate my supper, more and more were arriving. I started the observation period at 7:30, when I guessed maybe 100 swifts were present. They kept coming and coming, swirling around the chimney, flying off, then coming back, some swirling close and diving towards the chimney, then peeling off. It was very hard to try to get an estimate. One the birds started entering the chimney, I tried to count by 1s, then by 5s, then by 10s. I know that not all of the birds I “counted” actually entered the chimney, but I under-counted many of the groups as they went in. I got up to 1,000 birds and could see that about that many were still swirling around outside. I knocked off at 7:55 when it was almost too dark to see any more, and by then the stream of birds had slowed to a trickle.
