Observation details
observed for about 4 hours beginning about 1:00pm; initially found by following BLJA calls plus one I didn't know that turned out to be a juvenile COHA (fine streaking on breast and rounded tail); BADO had a chipmunk in its talons had been on the ground probably harassed by the COHA but flew a few dozen yards to a low branch in the brush; it switched perches a few time eventually settling about 20 up a maple; it picked at the head of the prey a few times over the course of about an hour; it closed its eyes and appeared to sleep (that was about 2:00); about 4:15 it regurgitated a pellet and then after another 10 minutes began tearing at the head of the prey; by about 5:00 it had the head off and was working on the flesh of the upper body; it changed perches a couple more times; it flew again (Never more than 10-15 yards) and I circled the brush that obscured my view; by the time I got around to find it it had apparently swallowed the rest of the chipmunk; at this point I watch a bit and then went to the base of the maple to find the pellet; this is likely the same bird observed a couple days earlier in the week -- it seems to perch low and begins hunting between 4 and 5 based on the other to observations
