Observation details
***MEGA. First for Ontario. Bird first found by Ben Di Labio on 2 June about 10 km to to the northwest (also on the Carp River). Bird was seen there on 2 and 3 June and was assumed to have departed until it was found on the evening of 7 June by Mike Norkum about 4 km southeast from Palladium Drive location. Also reported from the 7 June location again early on 8 June before being refound at the Palladium Drive location on 8 June about mid-morning. Stayed at Palladium Drive (flying off by returning a couple of times) until mid-afternoon. It was refound at dusk roosting on Conroy Island in the Ottawa River (Quebec). During this observation the bird offered excellent viewing as it actively fed in a small pond beside the Carp River (created by the Carp River flooding in spring). It caught many small fish during the hour I observed it along with many others. The bird did not show the two long head plumes that is characteristic of this species that was shown on the 2 June observation; while the bird's feathers were wet due to rain, they would have still been visible given the excellent viewing conditions so we can only assume that the plumes had broken off between 2 and 8 June. Lacking the plumes, the bird was still identifiable as it showed bluish lores as well as yellow feet and solid black legs (no yellow up the backside).
