Tropical Kingbird at Gaviota State Park, Santa Barbara County, CA
Observation details
I found this Tropical Kingbird along the opposite shore of Gaviota Creek as seen from the open area behind campsite 35. The bird was flycatching from exposed branches at mid-level and would on occasion drop into the water on its belly as it went after bugs, mainly yellow-jacket bees. It was vocalizing at one point uttering the typical stuttering trill call. I watched it for about 10 minutes as it worked the shoreline branches. Eventually, it flew out of sight and I could not refind it. It was identified as a Tropical Kingbird by the bright yellow belly, the heavy black bill, dark masked appearance, and it showed a forked tail
