Observation details
Dark morph juvenile Jaeger studied at length with Woody Baxter who found the bird approximately one week ago. Smaller head and bill shape favor Long-tailed. Bill approximately one-half black with more shallowly hooked bill than expected for Parasitic. Gonydeal angle also farther from bill tip than expected for Parasitic. Bird lacked buffy chevrons on primaries, lacked dark cap with paler streaked nape, and in general lacked any buffy tones that would suggest Parasitic. When wings were raised and in flight, 2 possibly 3 white primary shafts were seen, definitely not 4-5. Additionally, heavily barred undertail coverts were black with straight white to off-white barring, which also suggests Long-tailed. Observed for ca. 2 hours foraging in old stubble for grasshoppers and other insects. Photos.
