Observation details
Easy to identify when the male shows the yellow cap. Though both show white down the back it's not bold like in Hairy Woodpeckers. Three-toed also have fine barring along the lower wing and breast, just a little darker overall and somewhat smaller birds than Hairy Wdpkrs. They are bigger than Downy.
