Observation details
Uncommon fall migrant. Small dull yellowish fall warbler skulking underfoot at edge of path—Nearly stepped on it—from edge of mowed path east of Lab of ornithology parking lots, under power lines. Bright yellow undertail coverts, yellowish wash breast to belly. Greenish-yellow wings. Tail longer than potentially similar Tennessee Warbler. Grayish hood. Dirty white eye arcs. Husky “Shkuut!” call note. Orange-crowned makes a sharper junco-like “chip!” call note. Also, Orange-crowned tends to remain more visible, foraging near tops of field plants (goldenrods, etc.). Initially mis-identified as Orange-crowned. Re-evaluated after private message from Jay McGowan. Jumped the gun on ID, due to eagerness to share potentially good sighting. Not many birders are birding at the Lab any more because of COVID-19, so trying to start covering area more frequently...
