Media notes
natural vocalizations; calls from several birds both perched and in flight on somewhat wet tundra that had many drier patches interspersed. The initial series of bubbly chase calls are from three different males chasing each other, with a female bird giving the loud trill call. The subsequent raspy calls are from the female bird on the ground, appearing to be performing a distraction display running hunkered down through the grass with its rump exposed and tail flared. The low pitched gurgle and then hooting song that follow are from one of the previous males in flight, returning from the chase. The female then does more of her raspy calls before the singing male starts a tail-cocked display while running on the ground after the female and giving the series of lower-pitched raspy calls. The male bird then breaks into (at 0:40) an alternating series of fast, modulated low-pitched hoots and higher pitched, mechanical sounding, rising/falling trills while the female gives the louder modulated calls. In short, a remarkable variety of displays and calls all in about a minute!
