One showing its foot!
Observation details
****rare. The closest bird, a not-quite-fully molted adult. Viewed from (35.3514529, -103.4513798), at end of path. Access not possible until I think next Friday, though. Large and bulky phalarope a bit tricky to pin as REPH from afar due to moly, but it came 5 feet from my face so it’s good. Back a mix of clean gray patches and darker patches with many fine (vs only a few big) buffy streaks. Underparts has slight orangish wash on throat typical of this plumage. Back of neck stripe more gray than black, and almost nonexistent at narrowest point. Bill much thicker than RNPH, with very faint pale base only visible in best pics. When it flew around a couple times, call a sharp peep and underwing almost all white. Nice pics.
