Observation details
An intermediate juvenile, a very confiding bird as we were able to get very close to it. At times it even swam right up to us and seemed to be oblivious to our presence. A dainty, overall brownish-gray jaeger with a nape lighter than the head and back. Well-marked light tips to the upper-part feathers gave a scalloped looked to the back. The under-tail coverts were strongly barred. The smallish bill was two-toned bluish-gray with a dark tip. The one time I saw it in flight I could see some white in the basal underside of the primaries. I saw no white in the upper-side of the blackish-looking wings. Nearly all its time was spent picking flies off the surface of the water and along the shore.
