Foraging immature American Avocet at Thomaston flats, Knox County, Maine 8 Sep 2020 on rising tide
Observation details
Present on flats sweeping its bill in small puddles, then in tidal channel, and lastly along shore as flats completely covered. At 13:08 the bird flew west up river. Same bird found by Eddy Edwards two days ago (6 Sep) and seen again yesterday by Don Reimer. The bill appears to be only shallowly curved upward at the end, suggesting this bird is a male. The broad whitish margins at the tips of the inner primaries are juvenile, suggesting this is an immature bird that has undergone some pre-formative molt. A male in similar plumage had been present at Scarborough Marsh until recently, and may be this bird.
