Media notes
Chip calls by an unseen Kentucky Warbler recorded by Curtis A. Marantz on 3 September 2020 in the riparian corridor along Matilija Creek above Matilija Lake, Los Padres National Forest, Ventura, California. This bird was initially heard on 28 August 2020 by Curtis Marantz, then heard again on 1 September 2020 by Jon Dunn, and heard and seen briefly on 2 September 2020 by Adam Searcy. When recorded at 10:10, the bird was unseen but apparently 15-20 meters away, probably two or three meters off the ground in the dense understory in the central portion of a riparian corridor dominated by Red and Arroyo Willows, but also with a few each of California Sycamores and Black Cottonwoods. This recording was made in almost precisely the same location where both Yellow-throated Vireo recordings were made. These calls were given spontaneously, but subsequent playback, “spishing,” and much searching failed to provide a visual observation or even any additional calls. Recording was made with filters off on the MKH-20, but set to 2 mv/Pa on the recorder, but no attenuators on either the microphone or recorder. Recording was high-pass filtered at 6 dB at 100 Hz using Audacity version 2.3.3. The skies were clear, there was little or no breeze, and temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s.
Observation details
Shortly after seeing the Yellow-throated Vireo the first time, Searcy, Dean, and I began hearing from the dense understory vegetation at 10:10 am a series of relatively loud chip calls that were "sweet" like those of a Yellow Warbler yet with a deeper quality. I typically describe the call as a "choip" that seems intermediate between the sweeter calls of Yellow Warbler and the deeper "chup" of a Hermit Thrush. Unfortunately, despite much effort expended in this area over the two-plus hours following our encounter, we neither saw this bird nor heard it calls again. Searcy and I did however manage to get brief recordings of this call.
