Observation details
The bird was perched in an ash, facing me, when I first saw it. Initial thought was Merlin, but colour on head (esp. dark patch around eye), made me think of Mississippi Kite. I next moved to get a view from behind; plumage and size confirmed the ID. After viewing the bird for a few more seconds, I hurried home (200 m away) to get my camera. The bird was still perched and I managed a number of photos. Description of bird: slender raptor, somewhat larger than Merlin. Longer tail and longer wings than Merlin. Underparts pale, streaked with brown. Face pale, with distinct dark area around eye. Upper parts greyish with paler feather edges, creating a scaly appearance. Total observation time about 10 min, at a distance of about 20 m. I then left to post sighting on manitobabirds group site.
