Observation details
Initially thinking GRFL on this bird and pursued for photos. Field ID between the two species can be difficult. Video also obtained and what I had a hard time discerning in the field about the tail pumps was whether they were going up or down. Upon viewing video later however it can be determined that the pumps are upward and that some of the pumps are probably more likely just "empid tail twitches", but not the methodical downward pumps of a GRFL. Bird also seemed to me at the time to be larger and longer than what I expect of DUFL, however really nothing next to the bird to base that on. I never got very close to this bird and sort of followed it around as it circled between several clumps of trees. It seemed to always stay rather low and somewhat in the open. It exhibited a lot of tail movement. Field marks noted were: bold white eyering, pale supraloral spot, short primary projection, long tail. Fork in tail too great for more squared off GRFL tail. Length of tail similar to GRFL. Under color of bill appears pale and did not note dark tip nor can I make any out in photos. Some DUFL bills can be relatively pale however, lacking the darker colored tip. This field mark can also be difficult to ascertain. Mantle of this bird as shown in a couple of the poor photos would appear to be more olive than expected for GRFL. Wing panel also with more contrast than would be expected in GRFL. Hammond's easily eliminated by short primary projection amongst a number of other field marks.
