Observation details
Apparently the same individual that has been visiting our yard at regular intervals since 6 July. (Not all reported on eBird.) In mid-July I reported an adult with juvenile, but more careful listening during the last few visits suggests it's one individual (possibly a female as the traditional "hoohoohoo hoo hoo" part of the vocalization is more subdued than robust). A series of loud "yowlp" calls occurring every 10-20 seconds occasionally switches to the "hoo" series that confirms the ID. The "yowlp" call dominates the vocalization sequence. I could find no match for the "yowlp" calls on Macauley, and wouldn't describe what we were hearing as a mewing call that these owls apparently occasionally make (according to NAS Master Guide to Birding). Katydids calling throughout.
