Observation details
When heading out on the trail, about 200 feet before you reach the spot where the trail branches in two directions there is an opening in the trees. That's where I saw this large black woodpecker in a tree with a broad, bright white slash "painted" vertically down his side. When I returned after walking the loop, there he was again. Hindsight being 20-20, I have now looked up information on these birds and played some calls on my computer, and I think I heard one (possibly same one) calling near one of the bridges on the trail. At the time I wondered if it was some sort of young hawk or something. Not sure on this though. And here I thought they'd sound similar to the yellow-bellied sapsuckers I'm used to...
