Observation details
Rare For Quincy. Minimum; continuing amongst the mass of terns that M. Iliff had reported on yesterday. All the ones I could ID were adults. There were probably some juveniles but I wasn’t confident enough with those. Good light, but the bulk of the terns were in the middle of Quincy Bay. Occasionally some terns came a little closer and I was able to hear both Common calls and a few Roseate “chiv-vik” calls. While scoping I was able to see that the Roseates were much more pale overall, with white undersides, many showing black bills, and varying amounts of black on the head. The first few primary feathers on the upper side of some were entirely dusky, with the rest of the wing white. Flight differed from COTE, as the wing beats were quicker and more stiff and they appeared to be faster than the Commons.
