Observation details
Significant number in the mudflats at low tide, very skittish after a peregrine took one of their number away. Three flocks of roughly 500 birds each were taking off and landing repeatedly. At one point the three merged and I managed three quick photos trying to get the whole flock. Counting from those photos in groups of five where possible to app. 20 where dense, I came up with 1600. Assuming overlap and some birds in flight entering one frame from the other (the middle frame alone had 1120), a conservative count of 1250 seems reasonable.
