Observation details
First located by Joe Eades. Brought in by remnants of Hurricane Laura. Small, dark slate-gray bird resting on water in Cypress Lake (lake near entrance). Some dark chestnut tones sometimes seen, but likely due to direct sunlight. Obvious storm-petrel. Tail length shorter than primary extension. From flight shots by Colin Dobson and film by Tim Kavan: feet did not extend beyond tail (as in Wilson’s), white rump band appeared straight and not partially disected(as in Leach’s), tail weakly notched (differing from Leach’s), carpal bar appeared weak, wingbeats appeared shallow (lacking depth and flutter of Leach’s). Bird appeared healthy (all things considering) and was alert. It frequently moved its head and seemed to pick things out of the water from time to time. At one point it stretched both wings and yawned.
