Observation details
One particularly dark individual had me thinking about Indian Pond Heron for a few days. Note the rather dark upper side and also the heavy thick streaking on the sides of the breast! Although there is no clear dark stripe visible on the lores, but this could be because the bird is already mounting into summer plumage. The feature wich eventually clinched the ID were the elongated crown feathers, which should be totally white in Indian Pond Heron. This bird has black edges to the elongated crown feathers and is therefore a Squacco Heron!
