Observation details
Black-bellied Bustards (Lissotis melanogaster) are found over much of sub-Saharan Africa, preferring savanna, tall open grassland and cultivated fields. The males are notable for their extraordinary display and call, in which the male makes a frog-like croak, then retracts his head and neck, and makes a growl followed by a ‘pop’ as he lifts his head. Unfortunately, this male Black-bellied Bustard just stood quietly by the road verge as I videoed him. A Swainson’s Spurfowl is calling nearby.
